Here at Groundworks, we’re all about making our art forms accessible to everyone. We know metal studios can often be male-dominated spaces, but we really want to change that. That’s why we’re so excited to offer Women’s Welding Night!

Join other like-minded women and femmes for four weeks to learn the basics of shop safety and terminology, and an introduction to welding equipment and how to properly and safely use it. Our hope is that by the end of this class, you’ll feel comfortable and confident in not just our metal studio, but any other you find yourself walking into.

This class has no prerequisites and is specifically set up for absolute beginners to this art form. Our Metal Studio does have some safety basics before anyone is allowed to join in the fun (failure to meet these requirements will result in not being granted access to the equipment):

• Please come dressed in close-toe shoes, and natural material clothing, i.e. cotton or linen, long pants are required.
• For welding, a long sleeved cotton shirt is recommended that fully covers your chest. We have long sleeve over-shirts in the studio. Please be aware that sparks can damage clothing.
• A bandana or tight cap is advised. If you have long hair, please have it securely tied back from your face.
• No loose or dangling jewelry, long earrings or scarves.
• We will provide safety goggles and other PPE, but if you have your own and would like to bring them, please do!
• Please bring a water bottle!

Learn the basics of linocut printmaking to make a poster! Printmaking allows the artist to create many copies of the same image, making it the perfect medium for spreading the word -- make a piece to commemorate an event, express a powerful statement, or simply share amongst friends. This class will cover the basics of carving and printing linoleum, designing a multi-color piece, tearing paper, and editioning. This class is 8 weeks, and comes with open lab. Ages: 16+ All supplies and materials will be provided.

For students that have never touched clay to those still learning the basics.

This class will cover the basic “how tos” of pottery. Students will learn the foundations of throwing, including how to confidently center, pull, and trim pots on the wheel. The class will also cover basic glazing techniques, attaching handles, and how to track your pieces through the studio.

Ages: 16+

Note: This class will meet at the MAIN location at 3750 Canfield Street. You will only have open lab access at the same studio as your class.

This class is Pay What You Can with a suggested price of $290.

Looking for a lamp, but can’t find the perfect one for your space? Come make your own in the clay/wood crossover!

In this 8 week class, you will learn how to make and assemble your own lamp. We will spend 4 weeks in the clay studio throwing and decorating ceramic bases. The remaining 4 weeks will be spent in the wood shop learning how to use the lathe, turning lamp parts and then assembling the final product. One lamp kit per student will be provided but bulbs and shades will need to be purchased individually. Ceramic throwing experience is necessary, no previous wood experience is required.

Open Lab: The clay portion of this class does not come with additional open lab time. Once the class switches into the wood studio, students will have access to the wood studio during open lab times. 

What to wear to the wood studio?  

Safety First: Long pants, and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with socks that protect up to the ankle.  Shirts and tops should be easy to tuck in, with sleeves that can be rolled up as needed.  Tie back long hair to ensure safety.  We offer safety goggles, dust masks and ear protection, and they must be worn in the wood studio.  Feel free to bring your own if you are more comfortable with them.  Jewelry, loose-fitting clothing, or any other items that could dangle will need to be secured while using machines.

Safety Information:

Learn about the various hand-building tools, create functional and sculptural pieces, and work on a variety of decoration practices.

Glass Studio Sampler New to glasswork and don’t know where to start? You’re in the right place! Our Glass Studio Sampler class is the perfect place to begin your journey of learning and understanding the material and techniques of making beautiful art with glass. T

his class will spend four weeks going over low-fire glassworking techniques like kiln fusing, sheet glass cutting, and coldwork (working with unheated glass). The projects will be simple and may vary depending on the material and technique being covered that week.

In this class, students will learn about the basics and varieties of intaglio printmaking, a process in which ink is pushed into the recesses of a plate and wiped away from the surface before printing, which allows for interesting textures, fine lines, and a high degree of detail. This class will cover drypoint, collagraph, Tetrapak printmaking, and copper etching techniques. Ages: 16+ All supplies and materials will be provided.
