Embark on a transformative journey into the world of hand tools, where precision, creativity, and mindfulness converge. This immersive 8-week class is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge to master a range of essential hand tools, from planes and chisels to saws and scrapers.

Key Skills and Techniques:

  • Tool Sharpening: Learn the art of sharpening tools to perfection, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Hand Tool Mastery: Develop a deep understanding of each tool's unique capabilities and applications.
  • Traditional Joinery: Explore classic joinery techniques, such as dovetails, mortise and tenon, and finger joints.

Prerequisites: This is a level 2 class, students should have some level of woodworking experience to participate.

Class Policies & Information:

Open Lab: This class includes access to the studio during Open Lab hours. Open Lab is exclusively for students who are currently enrolled in the program. You are allowed to attend one Open Lab session per week, totaling 3 hours during the duration of your class. You may only attend the Open Lab session for the class in which you are registered. This time is intended for independent work on your class project. While studio staff will be present, they are there to ensure you are using the tools safely, not to provide instruction.

Class Make-Up: Our studios are full with adult and youth classes 7 days a week, 48 weeks a year. Typically, every class is full, which means there is simply no space for students to make up classes. If we cancel an entire class due to weather or other emergencies, we can not guarantee we will be able to schedule a make-up class. Individuals who miss a class will not be able to make it up. Please read the Frequently Asked Questions for more information about missed classes.

Studio Clean Up: Clean-up is critical! Please help our hardworking staff and volunteers by beginning clean-up 30 minutes before the end of class, helping out with common areas, and leaving class on time.

Print Adult 3A • Pop-Art Printmaking: Screen Printing Basics • Beginner/All Level Screen Printing • SAT (May 3 - May 24) • MAIN

Channel your inner Andy Warhol and come try screen printing, also known as silk screen printing.

This class is great for those who have limited printmaking experience and will provide an introduction from design conception to making a stencil, transferring it to the screen, and making a successful print.

Each week, the instructor will walk students through a different step of the technical screen printing process, breaking it down to its basics and opening your world to the myriad possibilities of this fun and adaptable printing process.

Ages: 16+ 

All supplies and materials will be provided.

This class is great for students who already have some experience with clay and are looking to take the next step.

The demonstrations for this class go beyond the basics. Students will learn how to make more complex forms and techniques including: altered forms, lidded jars, throwing off-the-hump, sgraffito, and more.

(Please check the class prerequisites before enrolling)

Ages: 16 and above

Class meets weekly on SUNDAYS

Note: This class will meet at the Hill location at 1010 Aurora Avenue. You will only have open lab access at the same studio as your class.

The Art of Mosaics

The Mosaic class will teach glass cutting, design placement and grouting.  Mosaics is destined to become your new favorite hobby!  You're welcome to continue this class if you have taken it before and make your own project(s).   All materials are included. Students leave the class with their very own, unique mosaic project to display or use.  No prior experience needed.

Ages: 16+

Print Adult 3A • Everything but the Kitchen Ink: 4-Week Printmaking Sampler • Beginner/All Level Printmaking • Pay What You Can • SUN (May 4 - May 25) • MAIN

New to printmaking and don't know where to start? Look no further than our 4-week introductory printmaking sampler! 

Each week our instructor will lead students through introductory techniques for different types of printmaking such as relief (carving into a block), monotype (one-of-a-kind prints made by layering objects on a plate), and intaglio (scratching an image into a surface). You'll learn all this as well as how to measure and tear paper, mixing and applying ink, and the basics of using the printing press.

This course provides a great way to get a real sense of the art of printmaking, and to identify which direction to go next! Once you start, your options are endless!

Ages: 16+ 

All supplies and materials will be provided.

Calendar May 4, 2025 at 5 pm, runs for 8 weeks

For students that have never touched clay to those still learning the basics.

This class will cover the basic “how tos” of pottery. Students will learn the foundations of throwing, including how to confidently center, pull, and trim pots on the wheel. The class will also cover basic glazing techniques, attaching handles, and how to track your pieces through the studio.

PLEASE NOTE: This class runs for 3.5 hours, which includes 1 hour of work time at the end of each class period. You will not have access to the studio outside of the scheduled class time. You will also not have access to the Groundworks other locations.

Ages: 16 and above

Wood Adult Session 3A • 1 Day Jointer/ Planer/Chop Saw • TUE ( May 6) • MAIN

Calendar May 6, 2025 at 7 pm

This class will be a comprehensive overview of the Chop Saw, Jointer and Planer, Including:

  • Review of individual components of each machine and including set up (Adjusting fences, setting for square, ect)
  • Execution of the primary purposes of each of these machines. (We will mainly focus on their primary and secondary functions as it pertains to the milling of rough lumber)
  • Safety Procedures (You will be shown how and where to stand, How to operate and perform the functions for milling in a very calculated way that puts forth the safety of you and the people around you. 

The main purpose of this class is to help students feel comfortable on these machines, which are vital to the process of milling lumber for future projects in a way that emphasizes safety, why having fun, and introducing new and exciting processes. 

Each person will get hands-on experience, guided by an instructor, and will have ample opportunity to practice the procedure taught during the class.
