Adult Session 5 • Level I Wheel • THUR (Aug. 29 - Oct. 17) • HILL

For students that have never touched clay to those still learning the basics.

This class will cover the basic “how tos” of pottery. Students will learn the foundations of throwing, including how to confidently center, pull, and trim pots on the wheel. The class will also cover basic glazing techniques, attaching handles, and how to track your pieces through the studio.

Ages: 16 and above

Class meets weekly on THURSDAY

Note: This class will meet at the Hill location at 1010 Aurora Avenue. You will only have open lab access at the same studio as your class.

Metal Adult Session 5A Class 4A: Hive Tool • WED (1 - Day Class) • MAIN

Calling all Beekeepers! Forge your own J-style hive tool for use in your apiary.  This is an introductory course where you will learn fire safety and management, shaping hot steel, and the appropriate use of the various parts of the anvil. You will spend some time forging, filing, twisting, and forming material. You will walk away with a useful bee-yard tool.

What to Wear in the Metals Studio?  

You must dress safely and appropriately. Arrive for class in all-natural fiber clothing, long pants, and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with socks that protect up to the ankle. Long hair must be tied back. Nylon, polyester, spandex, or other synthetics are not allowed around machines, equipment, or processes that can produce hot fragments, sparks, or flames. Layers are encouraged, as the studio can be very cold or very hot. 

Welding students are recommended to wear long sleeve shirts to prevent arc-flash burns. Additional protective gear shall be provided as needed. 

Personal Property: 

Personal materials will need to go home with you at the end of each class. We do not provide storage.

Contemplative Art with Gayle Van Gils

Please join us for visiting artist Gayle Van Gils one-time class on contemplative art.

In this class we will explore the concepts of space, form, and energy and how they inform our creative process. We will do a series of exercises, including meditation, object arrangement, mark marking, and creating intentional environments. These tools help us open to the present moment and create from an open state of mind, without self consciousness. 

What to bring: 

  • Natural or found objects to arrange
  • Please bring food with you - we will incorporate an exercise that includes holding a contemplative meal.

Gayle is a senior meditation leader in the Shambhala lineage, and studied Dharma Art extensively with its founder Chogyam Trugpa Rinpche. She is also an experienced ceramic artist, specializing in large sculpture work.

Beginner Blacksmithing – Barbecue Tools

Entry Level Class (No prerequisite required) in Blacksmithing

Enjoy the use of your own hand-made accessories and fire up the grill! Learn to make twisted skewers and a steak-turner. This beginning level class will cover shop safety, fire management, tools and equipment, and appropriate use of the anvil. Beginners will develop their tapering, bending, twisting, and punching skills. These techniques are a crucial ingredient for more advanced blacksmithing projects.

Print Adult Session 5B - A Touch of Printmaking: Collagraph (1 - Week Class)

Have you always wanted to try printmaking, but didn't know where to start? This series of classes are ideal for those who have limited experience and want a taste of the varied and intricate art of printmaking. You can sign up for one or all 4 of these "hors d'oeuvre" classes.

There will be an instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques for each of the following: relief, monotype, and intaglio. This will include carving, mixing and rolling ink, and making a successful print.

This class: Collagraph - learn how to make a simple intaglio plate by cutting away at the board. Ink is pushed into the grooves to reveal the design, and then printed on the press.

These courses provide a great way to get a real sense of the art of printmaking, and to identify which direction to go next! Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

Adult Session 5B • Whimsical Mugs • MON (Sept. 23 - Oct. 14) • EAST

Learn how to build mugs with a twist of whimsy!

Add a twist of whimsy to each one-of-a kind mug in this class. Start by learning how to build a mug with slabs, followed by demos on how to make your mug come alive - facial features, handles, decoration, color - all in high fire clay. Create a fun companion for morning coffee or afternoon tea.

This class takes place at Groundworks EAST at 3063 Sterling Circle, Boulder, CO. The EAST studio has a separate classroom for this class.

This class meets weekly for 4 weeks on MONDAYS.

Class does NOT include additional open lab time or clay. All work must be completed during class time. 

Ages: 16 and above

Print Adult Session 5B - Tetrapak Printmaking (4 - Week Class)

Pull your tetrapak soup or chai containers out of the recycle bin and use them to make art! You can cut and scratch into tetrapak to build your own plates and combine two unique and versatile forms of printmaking: drypoint and collagraph.

This class is great for those who have limited experience with Intaglio printmaking, which is printing ink from within the grooves of the plate, or for printmakers who want to try out the tetrapak method.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including making a collagraph plate, mixing and applying ink, and making a print using the press. Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

This class takes place at the new Groundworks Art Lab studio space at 3750 Canfield St. In north east Boulder

Ages: 16+ 

All supplies and materials will be provided.
