Metal Adult Session 6A: Hooks, for Home and Garden (4 Week Class)

Come create custom hooks of various styles for use around your homeand out in your yard. Whether hanging a wreath upon a door, or ahanging flower-basket on your porch, you will learn to shape hooksfrom different weights of steel bar. This beginning level class willcover shop safety, fire management, tools and equipment, andappropriate use of the anvil. Beginners will develop their tapering,bending, twisting, and punching skills. These techniques are a crucialingredient for more advanced blacksmithing projects.

What to Wear in the Metals Studio?  

You must dress safely and appropriately. Arrive for class in all-natural fiber clothing, long pants, and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with socks that protect up to the ankle. Long hair must be tied back. Nylon, polyester, spandex, or other synthetics are not allowed around machines, equipment, or processes that can produce hot fragments, sparks, or flames. Layers are encouraged, as the studio can be very cold or very hot. 

Welding students are recommended to wear long sleeve shirts to prevent arc-flash burns. Additional protective gear shall be provided as needed. 

Personal Property: 

Personal materials will need to go home with you at the end of each class. We do not provide storage. 

This class takes place at the new Groundworks studio space at 3750 Canfield Street, Boulder, CO.

Beginners, intermediates and experts welcomed! 

An opportunity to make the world's most comfortable Adirondack chair. We will be learning everything necessary to building an exceptional project from scratch.  We will use 4/4 rough lumber, laying out the project milling up our parts, using our planer, jointer, table saw, bandsaw, miter saw  and many hand tools, spokeshaves, chisels, carving tools and pyrography (wood burning) equipment. 

Customize it, make it your own, the sky's the limit to how much you would like to adorn your project with pyrography (wood-burning), and or some basic carving. 

Come join us in our brand new state of the art wood shop, let's make wood chips! Join the creative process.

Making things is awesome! 

A list of some of the skills to be acquired

  • Safe and proper use of power miter saw
  • The tuning sharpening and use of hand planes
  • The proper use of Japanese pull saws

Print Adult Session 6A - Printmaking with Trash! (4 - Week Class)

Use found objects right out of your recycle bin or off the ground to to build your own plates and learn about the unique and versatile form of printmaking called collagraph.

This class is great for those who have limited experience with Intaglio printmaking, which is printing ink from within the grooves of the plate. Plates are made by either building up, or cutting away, or both, and may incorporate the use of found objects.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including making a collagraph plate, mixing and applying ink, and making a print using the press. Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

Ages: 16+ 

All supplies and materials will be provided.

Print Adult Session 6A - Level II Color Theory: Explorations (4 - Week Class)

This unique set of classes will provide an overview of the role of color in any visual medium, while using various printmaking methods as a practical and expressive means for exploration. Students will gain an understanding of how we see, perceive, interpret and manipulate color as artists.

Note: Color Theory is a set of 2 classes, each 4 weeks long. Each class can be taken independently and in any order.

"Color Theory: Explorations" will be an introduction to color theory and concepts, including looking at example images, discussion, and various hands-on exercises that cover the fundamentals of color theory. Participants will walk away with their exercises as reference to guide their own work.

"Color Theory: Reduction Print" will put theory into practice! Each participant will create a 4 color reduction print edition that will ultimately become a print exchange for all class members. Each participant will end up with one print from their own edition, and a print from each of the other class members.

Print Adult Session 6A - Exploring Patterns and Textures - (4 - Week Class)

Explore patterns and textures by layering found objects into prints. 

Learn the basics of monotype printmaking using plexiglass plates, applying ink and incorporating found objects.

This class is ideal for those who have limited experience with printmaking. A monotype is a print that typically starts with a blank surface and results in a unique one-of-a-kind print. In this class, we'll experiments with several methods, such as "painting" on the plate, inking and wiping away, adding found objects, and making simple stencils.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including making a collagraph plate, mixing and applying ink, and making a print using the press. Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

Ages: 16+

This class is a perfect introduction for anyone wanting to get started in this craft, or just have a fun day trying something new. This class will teach you shop safety, fire management, tools and equipment, and the appropriate use of the various parts of the anvil. You will learn basic techniques for shaping hot steel, twisting, and punching and drifting holes.

Impress your friends and family by making your own cards, whether for an upcoming holiday, birthday, or some other fun event!

Learn the basics of relief printmaking using linoleum. This course provides an introduction to carving a block and making a successful print.

This class is great for those who have limited experience and to try their hand at linoleum printmaking. Linoleum does not have a grain and is a different experience than carving wood.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including carving a linoleum block, mixing and rolling ink, and making a print using the press. Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

Ages: 16+ 

All supplies and materials will be provided.
