Each week our instructor will lead students through introductory techniques for different types of printmaking such as relief (carving into a block), monotype (one-of-a-kind prints made by layering objects on a plate), and intaglio (scratching an image into a surface). You'll learn all this as well as how to measure and tear paper, mixing and applying ink, and the basics of using the printing press.

Participants will create relief prints while exploring experimental approaches that move beyond the traditional edition. Demonstrations will include modular collaborative prints, wall chine collé installations, modular print construction, and alternative methods for displaying, layering, and transforming prints. Through these techniques, participants will discover new ways to expand relief printmaking into one-of-a-kind artworks, layered compositions, and larger installations.

In addition to creating relief prints, participants will see demonstrations of several experimental techniques Salvator uses in her own studio practice. By using individual prints as modules for larger compositions and installations, participants will discover approaches that can expand the possibilities of their own printmaking and artistic practice.

Participants will leave with a series of relief prints, practical knowledge of several experimental techniques, and new ideas for transforming prints into unique artworks, modular compositions, and installations.

Marilee Salvator is an interdisciplinary artist and Professor of Art at Western Kentucky University. She received a BFA in Printmaking from Illinois State University and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of New Mexico. With over twenty years of teaching experience, she enjoys helping artists expand traditional printmaking through experimentation, material exploration, and creative problem-solving. Her work has been exhibited internationally and combines printmaking, sculpture, and installation.

Channel your inner Andy Warhol and come try screen printing, also known as silk screen printing. This class is great for those who have limited printmaking experience and will provide an introduction from design conception to making a stencil, transferring it to the screen, and making a successful print.

Each week, the instructor will walk students through a different step of the technical screen printing process, breaking it down to its basics and opening your world to the myriad possibilities of this fun and adaptable printing process.

In this class, students will learn about the basics and varieties of intaglio printmaking, a process in which ink is pushed into the recesses of a plate and wiped away from the surface before printing, which allows for interesting textures, fine lines, and a high degree of detail. This class will cover drypoint, collagraph, Tetra Pak printmaking, and copper etching techniques.

Take your linoleum carving skills to the next level. In level II linoleum, we will provide guided exercises in reduction linocut and registration methods for printing multiple colors. We will also have lessons in making printed greeting cards and envelopes for the holidays! Follow along with the curriculum or come with your own ideas and treat this as an independent study for your personal project. Instructor will help you to achieve the final outcome you are seeking..

This is a level 2 class, students are recommended to have some level of printmaking experience to participate.

Woodblock printing has a rich history, and was used to create both text and images on the same block. Also known as woodcut, woodblock printing is a relief printmaking technique where areas of the wood block that are not meant to be printed are carved away, leaving the image areas raised.

This 4-week intermediate to advanced level relief print class expands on the basics of relief and will include weekly instruction on techniques including carving, mixing and rolling ink, measuring and tearing paper, using the printing press, and making an edition of prints.

Bring a Bestie, your Bae, or even your Baba for a night of creating. Our instructor will get you set up on a project for a few hours of ink and fun. You will try your hand at printing by mixing and rolling ink, and learning the process to make prints. *Don't forget to wear or bring clothes you don't mind getting inky! Fabric ink will not wash out.
