Contemplative Art with Gayle Van Gils

Please join us for visiting artist Gayle Van Gils one-time class on contemplative art.

In this class we will explore the concepts of space, form, and energy and how they inform our creative process. We will do a series of exercises, including meditation, object arrangement, mark marking, and creating intentional environments. These tools help us open to the present moment and create from an open state of mind, without self consciousness. 

What to bring: 

  • Natural or found objects to arrange
  • Please bring food with you - we will incorporate an exercise that includes holding a contemplative meal.

Gayle is a senior meditation leader in the Shambhala lineage, and studied Dharma Art extensively with its founder Chogyam Trugpa Rinpche. She is also an experienced ceramic artist, specializing in large sculpture work.

Print Adult Session 5B - A Touch of Printmaking: Collagraph (1 - Week Class)

Have you always wanted to try printmaking, but didn't know where to start? This series of classes are ideal for those who have limited experience and want a taste of the varied and intricate art of printmaking. You can sign up for one or all 4 of these "hors d'oeuvre" classes.

There will be an instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques for each of the following: relief, monotype, and intaglio. This will include carving, mixing and rolling ink, and making a successful print.

This class: Collagraph - learn how to make a simple intaglio plate by cutting away at the board. Ink is pushed into the grooves to reveal the design, and then printed on the press.

These courses provide a great way to get a real sense of the art of printmaking, and to identify which direction to go next! Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

Print Adult Session 5B - Tetrapak Printmaking (4 - Week Class)

Pull your tetrapak soup or chai containers out of the recycle bin and use them to make art! You can cut and scratch into tetrapak to build your own plates and combine two unique and versatile forms of printmaking: drypoint and collagraph.

This class is great for those who have limited experience with Intaglio printmaking, which is printing ink from within the grooves of the plate, or for printmakers who want to try out the tetrapak method.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including making a collagraph plate, mixing and applying ink, and making a print using the press. Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

This class takes place at the new Groundworks Art Lab studio space at 3750 Canfield St. In north east Boulder

Print Adult Session 5B - Level II Color Theory: Making a Reduction print (4 Weeks)

This unique set of classes will provide an overview of the role of color in any visual medium, while using various printmaking methods as a practical and expressive means for exploration. Students will gain an understanding of how we see, perceive, interpret and manipulate color as artists.

Note: Color Theory is a set of 2 classes, each 4 weeks long. Each class can be taken independently and in any order.

"Color Theory: Making a Reduction Print" will put theory into practice! Each participant will create a 4 color reduction print edition that will ultimately become a print exchange for all class members. Each participant will end up with one print from their own edition, and a print from each of the other class members.

Print Adult Session 5B - Monotype Printmaking - (4 - Week Class)

Learn the basics of monotype printmaking using clear acrylic plates (aka plexiglass). We'll have fun with applying ink and incorporating found objects.

This class is ideal for those who have limited experience with printmaking. A monotype is a print that typically starts with a blank surface and results in a unique one-of-a-kind print. In this class, we'll experiments with several methods, such as "painting" on the plate, inking and wiping away, adding found objects, and making simple stencils.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including making a collagraph plate, mixing and applying ink, and making a print using the press. Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

Print Adult Session 5B - Relief Printmaking - Linoleum (4 - Week Class)

Learn the basics of relief printmaking using linoleum. This course provides an introduction to carving a block and making a successful print.

This class is ideal for those who have limited experience and to try their hand at linoleum printmaking. Linoleum does not have a grain and is a different experience than carving wood.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including carving a linoleum block, mixing and rolling ink, and making a print using the press. Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

Learn the basics of relief printmaking using wood. This course provides an introduction to carving a block and making a successful print.

This class is ideal for those who have limited experience and to try their hand at woodcut printmaking. Wood blocks can sometimes have an organic look, and you can use the woodgrain to the benefit of your design.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including carving a woodblock, mixing and rolling ink, and making a print using the press. Come have some fun in our new printmaking studio!

Print Adult Session 5B - Printmaking on Fabric (4-Weeks)

Learn numerous approaches for creating and printing your own unique designs on various fabrics and papers. This is a perfect class for anyone interest in printing on fabric and wanting to explore their own patterns and images, including quilters, pattern designers, embroidery artists, collage artists, clothing artists, etc.

Many different relief printing techniques and materials will be covered. These basic processes will be mastered with and without a press so you can print anywhere and anytime.

Starter fabric will be provided, but if you have plant-based fabric (linen, cotton, hemp, etc.) at home that you would love to print on please bring to class.

This class takes place at the new Groundworks Art Lab studio space at 3750 Canfield Street, Boulder, CO. 

Ages: 16+
