Curious how to use milling machinery– table saw, chop saw, jointer, and plainer? This beginner-level class will focus primarily on milling: the fundamental process of measuring, cutting, and preparing wood for a project. Over the course of 4 weeks, you'll learn how to safely use several of our milling machines to cut and shape wood, as well as some of the basics of joinery (joining pieces of wood together), and shaping and finishing with hand tools. We'll walk you through the whole process of creating a simple but beautiful functional piece that you'll want to brag to all your friends about.

This class has no prerequisites and is open to beginners and seasoned woodworkers alike, but our Wood Studio has some safety basics before anyone is allowed to join in the fun (failure to meet these requirements will result in not being granted access to the equipment): 

•  Please come dressed in close-toed shoes, a shirt that can be tucked in and either short sleeves, or sleeves that can be rolled up past your elbows. 
• No loose or dangling jewelry.
• If you have long hair, please have it securely tied back from your face.
• We will provide safety goggles and/or full face shields, ear protection, and face masks to cover nose and mouth, but if you have your own PPE you would prefer to use, please do!

Please note that students only have open lab access corresponding to their specific class area (e.g., milling open lab is separate from turning open lab).

Each week our instructor will lead students through introductory techniques for different types of printmaking such as relief (carving into a block), monotype (one-of-a-kind prints made by layering objects on a plate), and intaglio (scratching an image into a surface). You'll learn all this as well as how to measure and tear paper, mixing and applying ink, and the basics of using the printing press.

Ages: 16+

Always wanted to try hand-building, but didn't know where to start? This class is a great intro to the studio in 5 short weeks!

This class is intended to get you familiar with the basics of hand-building. Students will learn techniques like pinching, coiling, and building with slabs. This class is ideal for those who have limited experience, but are looking to learn more with a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week.

This class is Pay What You Can with a suggested price of $200. 

Class meets weekly on TUESDAYS.

All pieces will be fired to Cone 6 in a oxydation kiln.

Always wanted to try the potter's wheel, but didn't know where to start? This class is a great intro to the wheel in 5 short weeks!

This class is intended to get you familiar with the basics of throwing on the potter's wheel. Students will have 3 weeks of throwing instruction, one week of trimming, and one week of glazing. This class is ideal for those who have limited experience and want to learn the basics of centering, trimming and glazing, with a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week.

Class meets weekly on WEDNESDAYS.

 All pieces will be fired to Cone 6 in a reduction kiln.

This class is intended to get you familiar with the basics of wheel-throwing and hand-building. Students will have 2 weeks of throwing instruction, one week of trimming, one week of hand-building, and one week of glazing. This class is ideal for those who have limited experience and want to learn the basics of the pottery studio, with a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week.

This class is Pay What You Can with a suggested price of $200

Will be available to register on Monday, July 27 at 8:00am.

Participants will create relief prints while exploring experimental approaches that move beyond the traditional edition. Demonstrations will include modular collaborative prints, wall chine collé installations, modular print construction, and alternative methods for displaying, layering, and transforming prints. Through these techniques, participants will discover new ways to expand relief printmaking into one-of-a-kind artworks, layered compositions, and larger installations.

In addition to creating relief prints, participants will see demonstrations of several experimental techniques Salvator uses in her own studio practice. By using individual prints as modules for larger compositions and installations, participants will discover approaches that can expand the possibilities of their own printmaking and artistic practice.

Participants will leave with a series of relief prints, practical knowledge of several experimental techniques, and new ideas for transforming prints into unique artworks, modular compositions, and installations.

Marilee Salvator is an interdisciplinary artist and Professor of Art at Western Kentucky University. She received a BFA in Printmaking from Illinois State University and an MFA in Printmaking from the University of New Mexico. With over twenty years of teaching experience, she enjoys helping artists expand traditional printmaking through experimentation, material exploration, and creative problem-solving. Her work has been exhibited internationally and combines printmaking, sculpture, and installation.

Join us at Groundworks Art Lab's Date Night! Our instructors will get you set up and working together on potters' wheels for a few hours of dirt and fun.

Make a piece, we'll glaze and fire your favorite one, then give you a call when it's ready in 4-6 weeks.

For any additional pieces you would like glazed and fired, there is a $5 fee per piece.

It's good to wear some clothes you can get dirty and shorter nails will be helpful. :)

Each participant will need their own registration to participate.

Clay and tools are included.
