Carving wooden spoons as art, you will learn to use many tools in the wood shop, and create a set of wooden spoons and a cutting board that you can adorn, making your kitchen and dinner parties custom and unique.

This class takes place at the new Groundworks Art Lab studio space at 3750 Canfield Street, Boulder, CO. Ages: 16+ 

All supplies and materials will be provided.

Create your own eating utensil set. Learn the basic skills of shapinghot metal with hammer and anvil, while making a table knife, spoons,and a fork.  This beginning level class will cover shop safety, firemanagement, and use of tools and equipment. Special emphasis on usingall hammer faces and hammer control in forging. Students will exploretechniques which are a crucial ingredient for more advancedblacksmithing projects.

What to Wear in the Metals Studio?  

You must dress safely and appropriately. Arrive for class in all-natural fiber clothing, long pants, and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with socks that protect up to the ankle. Long hair must be tied back. Nylon, polyester, spandex, or other synthetics are not allowed around machines, equipment, or processes that can produce hot fragments, sparks, or flames. Layers are encouraged, as the studio can be very cold or very hot. 

Welding students are recommended to wear long sleeve shirts to prevent arc-flash burns. Additional protective gear shall be provided as needed. 

Personal Property: 

Personal materials will need to go home with you at the end of each class. We do not provide storage.

Gas Metal Arc Welding, is the process by which an electric arc formsbetween a wire electrode and metal, causing fusion. Students willlearn MIG wire-feed welding and the basics of creating a small box andlid from steel bar and plate. Students will learn the basic techniquesfor drilling and threading holes for screws, as well as using ahand-held grinder. Students will practice techniques for putting steeltogether to make rectangular forms, fitting interior parts, andaesthetic sanding. Emphasis will be placed on both the welding andassembly processes.

Using beautiful stained glass, we will create a stained glass window of mosaics. Come enjoy a morning of creativity using materials I have collected from many locales. All skills welcome as glass cutting techniques, attachment and grouting techniques will be taught.

This workshop will be taught over two 3-hour sessions, October 24 - 25, 9am - noon (Second day is optional)

All skill levels are welcome

Ages 16+; Children ages 10-16 are welcome if accompanied by an adult. One adult per child, and each adult and child needs to register separately.

All supplies will be provided; just come have fun!

Wood blocks have an organic look, and you can use the woodgrain to bring beauty to your landscape design.

This class is great for those who have limited experience and to try their hand at woodcut printmaking. Learn the basics of relief printmaking using wood. This course provides an introduction to carving a block and making a successful print.

There will be a short instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week. Students will try introductory techniques, including carving a woodblock, mixing and rolling ink, and making a print using the press.

Ages: 16+ 

All supplies and materials will be provided.

Beginners, intermediates and experts welcomed! 

An opportunity to make the world's most comfortable Adirondack chair. We will be learning everything necessary to building an exceptional project from scratch.  We will use 4/4 rough lumber, laying out the project milling up our parts, using our planer, jointer, table saw, bandsaw, miter saw  and many hand tools, spokeshaves, chisels, carving tools and pyrography (wood burning) equipment. 

Customize it, make it your own, the sky's the limit to how much you would like to adorn your project with pyrography (wood-burning), and or some basic carving. 

Come join us in our brand new state of the art wood shop, let's make wood chips! Join the creative process.

Making things is awesome!

Calling all Beekeepers! Forge your own J-style hive tool for use in your apiary.  This is an introductory course where you will learn fire safety and management, shaping hot steel, and the appropriate use of the various parts of the anvil. You will spend some time forging, filing, twisting, and forming material. You will walk away with a useful bee-yard tool.

Have a piece of clothing you love, but it's not doing it anymore? Want to stand out from the crowd or show your creative side? You're going to design an image and print it on your clothes!

This is a perfect class for anyone interest in printing on fabric and wanting to explore their own patterns and images. Learn numerous approaches for creating and printing your own unique designs on various fabrics and papers. Several relief printing techniques and materials will be covered. These basic processes will be mastered with and without a press so you can print anywhere and anytime.

Starter fabric will be provided, but if you have plant-based fabric (linen, cotton, hemp, etc.) at home that you would love to print on please bring to class.

 

Ages: 16+ 

All supplies and materials will be provided.
