Wood Adult Session 2A: Crafting Wooden Spoons: A Hands-On Class (4-week)

Discover the joy of crafting beautiful, functional wooden spoons in this hands-on 4 week class. You'll learn essential wood carving techniques, from selecting the right wood to shaping and finishing your spoons.

Class Policies & Information:
Open Lab: This class includes access to the studio during Open Lab hours. Open Lab is exclusively for students who are currently enrolled in the program. You are allowed to attend one Open Lab session per week, totaling 3 hours during the duration of your class. You may only attend the Open Lab session for the class in which you are registered. This time is intended for independent work on your class project. While studio staff will be present, they are there to ensure you are using the tools safely, not to provide instruction.
Class Make-Up: Our studios are full with adult and youth classes 7 days a week, 48 weeks a year. Typically, every class is full, which means there is simply no space for students to make up classes. If we cancel an entire class due to weather or other emergencies, we can not guarantee we will be able to schedule a make-up class. Individuals who miss a class will not be able to make it up. Please read the Frequently Asked Questions for more information about missed classes.
Studio Clean Up: Clean-up is critical! Please help our hardworking staff and volunteers by beginning clean-up 30 minutes before the end of class, helping out with common areas, and leaving class on time.

Metal Adult Session 2: Fundamental Blacksmithing: An Introduction (8-week) Mar 7 - Apr 25

If you have wondered what the craft of blacksmithing is like to practice, this class is for you. Come create fascinating forms in steel with a highly experienced Blacksmith. Find out how to experience the joy of working with glowing metal while shaping steel into objects of utility and beauty. This beginning level class will cover shop safety, fire management, tools and equipment, and appropriate use of the anvil. Beginners will learn multiple methods of shaping hot metals. Students will develop skills which are a crucial ingredient for more advanced blacksmithing projects.
In this 8-week class, you will spend more time exploring and deepening your understanding of the fundamentals of blacksmithing. This more in-depth approach allows for increased studio time and a more comprehensive learning experience.
What to Wear in the Metals Studio?
You must dress safely and appropriately. Arrive for class in all-natural fiber clothing, long pants, and closed-toe, closed-heel shoes with socks that protect up to the ankle. Long hair must be tied back. Nylon, polyester, spandex, or other synthetics are not allowed around machines, equipment, or processes that can produce hot fragments, sparks, or flames. Layers are encouraged, as the studio can be very cold or very hot.
Welding students are recommended to wear long sleeve shirts to prevent arc-flash burns. Additional protective gear shall be provided as needed.
Personal Property:
Personal materials will need to go home with you at the end of each class. We do not provide storage.
All supplies and materials will be provided.
All Friday, Saturday, and Sunday classes will be available to register on Friday, February 7 at 8:00 am.
Adult Session 2 • Level I Wheel • SAT (Mar. 8 - April 26) • Pay What You Can • MAIN

For students that have never touched clay to those still learning the basics.
This class will cover the basic “how tos” of pottery. Students will learn the foundations of throwing, including how to confidently center, pull, and trim pots on the wheel. The class will also cover basic glazing techniques, attaching handles, and how to track your pieces through the studio.
Ages: 16 and above
Class meets weekly on SATURDAYS
Note: This class will meet at the MAIN location at 3750 Canfield Street. You will only have open lab access at the same studio as your class.

Metal Adult Session 2A: Tool Making: Hand Tools (4-week) SAT Mar 8 - Mar 29

Over the course of four weeks students will learn basic forging, an introduction to steel metallurgy, steel alloys and heat treatment of those alloys. These skills and knowledge will be applied to forging a set of basic blacksmith punches and chisels. The forging in this class is accessible to all skill levels.
Leatherworkers, engravers, repousse artists and woodworkers would find this class directly applicable to making tools for their own craft.

Wood Adult Session 2A: Saturday Woodworking Sampler (4-week)

Immerse yourself in the world of woodworking by joining our comprehensive sampler class! This workshop is perfect for both beginners. Learn the basics of woodworking in this hands-on class. You'll gain experience with essential tools and techniques, including:
- Safety: Understand woodworking safety procedures to protect yourself and your workspace.
- Hand Tool Usage: Master the art of using hand tools like saws, chisels, and planes.
- Power Tool Operation: Safely operate power tools such as drills, sanders, and routers.
- Basic Joinery: Explore traditional joinery techniques like dovetails, mortise and tenon, and pocket holes.
- Project Building: Apply your skills to build a small woodworking project, such as a cutting board or birdhouse.
As part of your woodworking journey, you will craft beautiful and functional items. These projects not only provide a practical application of the techniques you learn but also serve as wonderful additions to your home or thoughtful gifts for loved ones.

Youth Session 2A • Family Clay • SAT (Mar. 8 - Mar. 22) • Pay What You Can • MAIN • Pro-rated 3 wk Class

The Family Clay Class is a great opportunity for children to work together with an adult to make hand-built pottery!
Students will learn a variety of hand-building techniques, using tools, textures, stamps, and molds. Instructor will lead students in both functional and sculptural pottery projects and students will paint each finished piece with colored slips. Emphasis is on working on a project as a family. This is a fun class, built around community and creativity!
Please note registration is for 1 child and their adult. If you have more family members that want to get involved, please send an email to registration-clay@groundworksartlab.org!
Ages: 4+
This class is Pay What You Can with a suggest price of $90.

Print Adult Session 2A: Introduction to Screen Printing (4-week)

Screen printing is fun! Be just like Andy Warhol, Laurie Hastings, or Corita Kent, and come try screen printing, also known as silk screen printing.
This class is great for those who have limited printmaking experience. Learn the basics of screen printing using a silk screen. This course provides an introduction to creating your idea, making a stencil, transferring it to the screen, and making a successful print.
There will be an instructor demo and hands-on assistance each week.
Ages: 16+
All supplies and materials will be provided.

Youth Session 2A • Family Clay • SAT (Mar. 8 - Mar. 22) • $125 • MAIN • Pro-rated 3 wk Class
